Continuing Education

North Carolina General Contractors are required to complete 8 hours of continuing education annually for license renewal. There is a 2-hour mandatory course along with 6 hours of electives required.

As an approved NC Licensing Board for General Contractors education provider, the Greensboro Builders Association is offering CE courses…with discounted pricing for GBA members.

You have the option to register for a full day (8 hours) or select different dates for morning and/or afternoon sessions. We are offering a variety of topics for the electives, all of which will be NC Builder Institute (NCBI) courses.

Mandatory Courses

2021 NCLBGC Mandatory CE Course (M2021) 2 hours

The NC Licensing Board for General Contractor requires a mandatory 2 hour class to be taken. Our instructors will teach the mandatory course, along with the 6 hours of electives that are required for license renewal.

The required NCLBGC two (2) hour mandatory course explains the statutes and regulations for which qualifiers and licensees must comply with. Students will review current law, regulations, rules and statutory terminology used by the NCLBGC.  Students will also participate in a practical exercise in the application of knowledge they learned and understood during the course.

Objectives for the 2021 Mandatory Course:

  • Understand and explain the difference between authorized and unauthorized use of a license and the potential consequences for failing to comply with licensing laws and rules
  • Know and understand requirements for general contractors relating to building permits and inspections

Marketing – Creating an Outstanding Company in a Traditional Industry (MK104) 2 hours

Have you ever thought, “Wow, that was a great idea, why didn’t I think of that?” Well, we are going to discuss some unique ideas on how to market you and your business. We are going to look at out-of-the box ideas that may actually be right in front of us. We want to focus on being the outstanding company in an otherwise ordinary industry.

Managing Time: Your Key to Success   (PM101) 4 hours

A course designed to discuss various time management tools and how their use can affect profitability and productivity for you and your company. Group discussions will help you learn what tools other people or companies use and the results they have achieved. Basic project scheduling will also be discussed briefly, time permitting.

Best Hiring Practices for the Construction Industry (BM211) 2 hours

It is often said that employees can make you, or break you. This has never been truer than it is today. Since the Great Recession, we have been trying to staff our companies in the midst of a severe labor shortage; while our experienced leaders are retiring, the next generation (Gen Y) only wants to work in IT (Information Technology). In today’s class, we are going to learn to:

  • Set the appropriate expectations

Developing a Marketing Plan   (MK101) 4 hours

Successful business owners understand the importance of a business plan; however, many fall short of marketing their business properly. In this course, students will learn the components of, and begin writing, their own marketing plan. We will also identify all the relevant areas to invest your resources, establish an annual marketing budget, and ultimately increase your sales!

Note you can sign up for morning (8:00 am – 12:15 pm) and afternoon (1:30 – 5:30 pm) sessions on different dates as well as full day registration.

Information Needed: To complete registration, you will need to list your name and qualifier number as it appears on the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors website –

GBA Members: Make sure under GBA Membership Status to check Member before proceeding to receive discounted member pricing.

Course Status:  Due to regulatory restrictions, we are currently unable to hold in-person classes. Once restrictions are lifted, some courses will be held in-person.

NCLBGC Requirements: This class requires an identification check; registrants to present a picture ID (valid state or federal ID preferred) at check-in.  Registrants are required to be present for the entire duration of the course to receive NCLBGC Continuing Education Credit.

Cancellation Policy: If you need to change a course date, you can be reassigned to another date with no penalty. Must submit cancellation at least 10 business days prior to the course for a full refund, minus credit card fee (if applicable).
