Construction Careers: Scholarship Planning

Objective: Develop annual scholarship program for construction careers with recurring funding through the formation of our Construction Careers Scholarship Endowment Fund.
Join us for a brainstorming & planning session on Tuesday, October 10 at 1:30 pm at the GBA Office.
Our planning team has set some initial goals as we get started which include:
- Research established scholarship programs looking at the entire process…from scholarship criteria and the application process, to the selection and awards of scholarships
- Schedule meetings with area schools, colleges and workforce development organizations to develop partnerships, determining greatest needs and recommendations for a successful program
- Schedule meetings with GBA builders, remodelers and trade contractors to discuss today’s workforce needs and challenges, along with ways to increase awareness of the growing career opportunities within the trades to students, parents and adults
- Explore non-traditional scholarships, including opportunities for mentorship funding
Industry members are encouraged to join our planning team. Our goal is to develop our scholarship program by year-end with the goal of providing our first scholarships in the spring of 2024.

Background Information
Workforce development is one of the greatest challenges our industry has faced over the past decade and continues today with an increasing shortage of skilled labor.
In an effort to expand our Construction Careers initiatives by providing financial support and scholarships for construction skills training, we are developing an annual scholarship program with sustainable funding sources. Our goal is to attract students, young adults, and others with financial support to obtain the skilled training needed to pursue careers in construction.
The GBA Board of Directors approved the formation of a Construction Careers Scholarship Endowment Fund. Endowment money will be restricted and held in a Construction Careers Scholarship Fund within the GBA Benefit Trust – a 501c3 charitable trust. Only interest and gains on the endowment principal will be used to provide scholarships. Our goal is to provide scholarships in the spring of 2024.
